Halloween Candy Corn Cake

For our daughter's Halloween-themed fourth birthday celebration, I made a Candy Corn cake. It was a three-layer cake made to a basic Victoria Sponge recipe, in Candy Corn colours. Never mind that it's April!

Our younger daughter really likes spooky things, almost as much as I do (she has excellent taste, of course). She liked the Candy Corn I bought and wrote about in my Halloween Candy from the USA article, so it was the inspiration for this cake. It was decorated with white, orange and yellow icing and covered with a pale orange buttercream on the sides. The three cake layers inside were coloured to match too, stuck together with strawberry jam and more buttercream. Black candles, ghost-shaped marshmallow Peeps, and Brach's Candy Corn and Pumpkins finished it off.

I'm not a great cake-maker, but it turned out OK. I'm thinking we might have to postpone Easter festivities by a week to enable us all to process the sugar before indulging in chocolate eggs as well!
